Peikko as a Partner in the Turku Taito Campus Alliance Project

Kupittaa Point is the most important urban development area in the Turku region in the coming years and a significant part of the development of the Science Park district.

The Kupittaa Point area is being developed using an alliance model and consists of two sub-projects, one of which is the Taito Campus. The alliance partners are the City of Turku, YIT, Lundén Architecture, and Renell Käppi Architects. Peikko is participating in the project as a partner under an Open Book model.

The new Taito Campus of the Turku Vocational Institute is one of the first buildings to be completed in the Kupittaa Point area. It will provide modern learning environments for more than 3,000 daily users. The total project budget is EUR 94.78 million, with a gross floor area of approximately 22,300 m².

Sustainability and accessibility have been key considerations in the design. The campus will be easily accessible by public transport and active mobility routes. The facilities have been designed to be flexible, adaptable, and suitable for shared use. The project aims to achieve a 4-star environmental classification from Rakennustieto and an A energy rating.


Peikko Helping Optimize the Structural Frame

Construction of the campus began in January 2026 and is scheduled for completion in early autumn 2028. The project has set ambitious targets not only for energy efficiency but also for adaptability and construction quality.

Peikko was involved already during the development phase, where it was responsible for optimizing the structural frame and defining structural solutions. Peikko’s technical expertise and cost-efficient frame solution have contributed positively to the project design.

“We were able to demonstrate the benefits and cost savings of our optimized solution. At the same time, we support the project’s sustainability goals with DELTABEAM® Green slim-floor beams, manufactured from more than 90% recycled steel,” says Peikko Sales Director Juuso Salonen.


Designing with the Construction Site in Mind

The project's complexity requires extensive structural engineering expertise and practical construction experience. Peikko’s Project Manager is Elina Hietanen, certified at IPMA Level C, while the design work has been guided by Development Project Manager Tero Ahtiainen.

“In our design work, our primary objective is to facilitate execution and support on-site production. For example, we integrate casting trays into the composite beams already at the factory, significantly reducing the need for on-site concrete casting, formwork, and reinforcement,” explains Hietanen.

The alliance has jointly developed construction guidelines to ensure high-quality implementation throughout the area, and the construction site follows the Green Deal agreement.

“It is great that we have reached the construction phase together with our partners. Peikko has been involved in the alliance from the design stage onward, bringing extensive expertise and a solution-oriented mindset to the project. The company has been responsible for the design and modeling of the Taito Campus structural frame—solutions that will significantly influence the building’s constructability and functionality far into the future,” says Maria Jääskeläinen, Alliance Project Manager at YIT.


Extensive Supply Package with Installation

Peikko is delivering the Taito Campus structural frame as a wet-installed solution. In addition to approximately 700 DELTABEAM® Green composite beams, the delivery includes nearly 300 ATLANT® composite columns and more than 150 PETRA® Green slab supports.

The frame also incorporates a wide range of Peikko connection products, including bolts, fixing plates, wire loops, and reinforcement couplers.

The slim beam-to-column connection uses elegant corbels that allow beams to be connected lightly yet securely. Among the heavier elements of the delivery are steel trusses, into which Peikko integrates suspension systems for suspended ceilings. This further simplifies and accelerates installation work on site.


The Building Begins to Take Shape

As the frame rises, the scale and architectural character of the building are becoming increasingly visible. Columns are erected floor by floor, defining corridors and open spaces. The green beams shape the façade, while slab supports help carry hollow-core slabs around openings.

Peikko’s portion of the structural frame phase will be completed by the end of 2026. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and façade installations will progress alongside frame erection throughout the autumn. Roof construction will begin once the frame is complete.

“The overall result will be truly impressive, and I believe the future users of the building will enjoy the campus once it is completed,” Hietanen concludes.
